CHAPTER FIVE

Malvina took a long time going to sleep.

When she awoke, the sun was pouring through the sides of the curtains.

She climbed out of bed and had started to dress herself before Nanny came in.

“I didn’t think you’d be awake so soon,” mumbled Nanny. “I thought being so very late last night, you’d want your beauty sleep.”

“I think we will go back to England this afternoon, Nanny,” Malvina blurted out unexpectedly

Nanny gave a cry.

“Oh, not this afternoon!”

“Why ever not?”

“Well, you said as how you were going to send the nurses to the theatre, and I thinks that the couple who looks after the old lady should go too. So I told them about it. And I thought, as you weren’t sure when we’d be leaving, we’d go to the theatre tonight.”

Malvina did not speak and Nanny carried on,

“We’ve already booked all the seats at the Théâtre des Variétés which I hears is a really good show and I can tell you I’m looking forward to it.”

“Then, of course, you must go, Nanny, and we will leave for England tomorrow. I will stay here tonight and look after her Ladyship.”

“There’s no need for that, Malvie. They’ve got it all arranged. The cook’s sister who lives a little way down the road says she’ll come in for the night with her husband, so it won’t matter how late we are getting back.”

As Malvina did not say anything, she continued,

“I expect you’ll be going out with some friends and there’s no need for you to worry about anything.”

Malvina gave a sigh.

“No, of course not, Nanny, and I do want you to enjoy the theatre while you are here.”

“I thought you’d say that and it’ll certainly be a change after being in the country for so long. I’ve almost forgotten what a stage looks like.”

“You will remember soon enough when you get to the theatre.”

When she had undressed last night, she had put the flamboyant gown and all the jewels that Blanche had lent her away in a drawer.

It was important that no one should see them, so after Nanny had left the room, she took the gown out and wrapped it up in some tissue paper.

Then she put it carefully in an empty dress-box and laid the jewels with it.

She had only just finished when Nanny came back into the room.

“Your breakfast is ready, Malvie, and I wondered why you hadn’t come downstairs.”

“I was just packing up something I have to take to one of my friends. I will see her after I have had breakfast. If you would like to go out shopping, Nanny, now is your opportunity.”

“There are just a few things I’d like to take back,” said Nanny, “things we can’t buy in England and the menservants in London asked me to bring them some funny postcards.”

“I’m sure you will be able to do that, Nanny.”

She picked up the dress-box and took it downstairs with her – just in case Nanny should be curious as to what was inside it.
